He Shows Them His Glory

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

According to the dictionary definition, to be transfigured is to “transform into something more beautiful or elevated.” This is what we see happening in Matthew’s Gospel today: Jesus takes his closest disciples up the mountain and there he is transformed – he is transfigured – before them. "His face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light”.

Moses and Elijah, representing the law and the prophets, are also a sign that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s promises of old. He completes the old covenant that God made with his people and brings us the new covenant of salvation.

The presence of Peter, James and John in this theophany or personal encounter of the Transfiguration, is a part of their experience of discipleship a call to deepen their knowledge of Jesus and their commitment with Him and, later with His people, the Church. The disciple, having experienced an encounter with God, needs to come down from the Tabor to continue to live in the midst of God's people as a witness, a promoter of encounters.

At the appointed time the disciple is called to be the proclaimer and the herald of the Transfiguration, of God's glory, manifesting, through his words and works, the face of the Risen Jesus. Let us be this disciple!! May the Lord shine his glorious light on us, his disciples of today.

Él les muestra su gloria

Queridos discípulos, paz.

Según la definición del diccionario, ser transfigurado es “transformarse en algo más bello o elevado”. Esto es lo que vemos que sucede en el Evangelio de Mateo hoy: Jesús lleva a sus discípulos más cercanos a la montaña y allí se transforma, se transfigura, ante ellos. “Su rostro resplandeció como el sol y su ropa se volvió blanca como la luz”.

Moisés y Elías, que representan la ley y los profetas, también son una señal de que Jesús es el cumplimiento de las antiguas promesas de Dios. Él completa el antiguo pacto que Dios hizo con su pueblo y nos trae el nuevo pacto de salvación.

La presencia de Pedro, Santiago y Juan en esta teofanía o encuentro personal de la Transfiguración, es parte de su experiencia de discipulado, un llamado a profundizar su conocimiento de Jesús y su compromiso con Él y, posteriormente, con su pueblo, la Iglesia. El discípulo, habiendo experimentado un encuentro con Dios, necesita bajar del Tabor para seguir viviendo en medio del pueblo de Dios como testigo y promotor de encuentros.

En el tiempo señalado, el discípulo está llamado a ser el pregonero y el heraldo de la Transfiguración, de la gloria de Dios, manifestando, a través de sus palabras y obras, el rostro de Jesús Resucitado. ¡Seamos ese discípulo! Que el Señor brille su luz gloriosa sobre nosotros, sus discípulos de hoy.
