My Flesh is True Food

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ presents two essential elements for Christian discipleship. On one side it presents the faith and the reality of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharistic species and on the other these Eucharistic species, the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ, offered to the disciple as food for the journey.

To understand the mystery and the faith in the Real Presence we just need to go back to the Scriptures, especially John 6. In the crucial moment of His life Jesus would not make jokes about His presence in the consecrated bread and wine. If He said "This is my body" and "This is my blood", it really is, even though the accidents of the bread and wine remain.

St. Augustin, speaking on the Eucharist, says to Christians "become what you eat". Our discipleship and communion with the Master Jesus must bring us to identify our life and our living with His. The Eucharist then becomes this food of eternal life which will give the strength and the grace we need to continue our journey here until we are called to the eternal feast of the Lamb. In the history of the Church there were many moments in which God has reminded us of the mystery and the reality of the Real Presence. These reminders were the Eucharistic miracles.

St. Thomas Aquinas proposed to Pope Urban IV the celebration of this Solemnity as the pope recognized the Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena in 1264. He even wrote an Office of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, from which we still sing today the Tantum Ergo and the O Salutaris Hostia. “The Church draws the life from the Eucharist" (Ecclesia de Eucharistia, St. John Paul II, April 17, 2003)

Mi Carne es Verdadero Alimento

Queridos discípulos, paz.

La Solemnidad del Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo presenta dos elementos esenciales para el discipulado Cristiano. Por un lado presenta la fe y la realidad de la presencia real de Cristo en las especies Eucarísticas y por el otro estas especies Eucarísticas, el cuerpo, la sangre, el alma y la divinidad de Cristo, ofrecidas al discípulo como alimento para el camino. Para entender el misterio y la fe en la Presencia Real solo necesitamos volver a las Escrituras, especialmente a Juan 6. En el momento crucial de Su vida, Jesús no bromeaba sobre Su presencia en el pan y el vino consagrados. Si Él dijo "Esto es mi cuerpo" y "Esta es mi sangre", realmente lo es, aunque permanezcan los accidentes del pan y del vino.

San Agustín, hablando sobre la Eucaristía, dice a los cristianos "sed lo que coméis". Nuestro discipulado y comunión con el Maestro Jesús debe llevarnos a identificar nuestra vida y nuestro vivir con el suyo. La Eucaristía se convierte entonces en este alimento de vida eterna que dará la fuerza y la gracia que necesitamos para continuar nuestro camino aquí hasta que seamos llamados a la fiesta eterna del Cordero.

En la historia de la Iglesia hubo muchos momentos en los que Dios nos ha recordado el misterio y la realidad de la Presencia Real. Estos recordatorios fueron los milagros Eucaríticos.

Santo Tomás de Aquino propuso al Papa Urbano IV la celebración de esta Solemnidad ya que el Papa reconoció el milagro Eucarístico de Bolsena en 1264. Incluso escribió un Oficio del Santísimo Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo, del que todavía hoy cantamos el Tantum Ergo y el O Salutaris Hostia.
