First Communion

The Sacrament of First Holy Communion is celebrated in the Springtime each year. Preparation for this Sacrament is done during Religion class for Saint Rose of Lima students and during Religious Education (Sunday School) for students who are members of the Saint Rose of Lima parish but do not attend Catholic school. Religious Education includes homeschooled students and distance learning students. The Sacrament of First Reconciliation is required to be received prior to the Sacrament of First Communion.

Our First Communion program focuses on a family-oriented approach to preparing the student through catechesis, the Gospel, and discipleship.

The First Communion preparation requirements are:

  • Any Catholic who has reached the age of reason (7-8 years old) and is engaged in preparation (and on track to complete it by the Sacrament date) for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation to receive in mid-winter.
  • Parent(s)/Guardian(s) must be registered and actively participating members of Saint Rose of Lima Church.
  • Student must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before they receive their First Holy Communion.
  • The parent(s)/Guardian(s) are responsible for providing a copy of the Baptismal Certificate before the student will be given lesson materials/online access to courses.
  • Participation in all preparation activities including practicing at home, attending weekly Mass, completing an at-home family retreat, attending the rehearsal, and any other required preparation.

Registration options:

  • If the student is a current 2nd or 3rd grader and registers prior to the deadline, in addition to the lessons taught at home, they will attend in-person classes on Sundays.
  • If the student is currently a 4th, 5th, or 6th grader, in addition to the lessons taught at home, they will attend in-person classes on Sundays.
  • If the student has not been baptized and is 9 years old (or will be 9 years old BEFORE receiving the Sacrament), please contact the Director of Religious Education prior to registering for classes.

Registration for Religious Education opens in April/May and all students must also attend in-person classes on Sunday (exceptions are made for medical needs). Once the registration deadline has passed, we have several other options available for new families. Contact the Director of Religious Education at 615-893-1843 ext. 1012.
