The disciple in the world

02-05-2023Weekly ReflectionFr. Chris Nunes

Dear Fellow Disciples, peace.

Jesus did not intend to found a community, a church which was closed to itself like a sect, out of touch with the world. On the contrary he founded a group, the Church, to be salt and light in the world, in continued contact and dialogue with the world. In this way the metaphors of salt and light in the Gospel today indicates the activity of the disciples, who though few and hidden like the salt make a great difference in the food (in the world). On the other hand the absence of salt in the food in compared to the incapacity and omission of the disciples in bear witness in the world.

The metaphor of the light represents the disciples who are capable to dispel the darkness of the world with their light, a light given by Christ Jesus. There are many signs of darkness today: sin, death, error, war, hunger, injustice, division. More then ever the church intended by Jesus is called to be salt and light. Following her founder, faithful to herself and what God intended for her, not compromising with the world but rather evangelizing the world, the Church, we, will appear immaculate and whole at the coming of Jesus Christ.

May the Holy Spirit continue to empower us with the virtues we need to continue to be salt and light.
