Moving Forward

05-22-2022Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

As a part of the parish facilities master plan produced by the strategic planning committee, initial recommendations include restoring the Marian Center and selling the old rectory on Maymont Drive. These are both located at the southwest corner of the parish property, behind the church. The parish is moving forward on both of these recommendations, and I want to report to you on that progress.

First, the Marian Center: plans are being developed to restore this structure that was originally built as the convent for the school sisters back in the 1950's. It has passed through many uses since then and now is mainly used for storage and by the Boy Scouts. The architect and planners involved in the master plan project considered the building to be underutilized and worthy of renovation and repurposing. Plans are being made to accommodate more storage elsewhere so that the Marian Center can become the center for the outreach ministries of the parish, especially the food pantry, backpack ministry, and Bridge.

The old rectory has most recently been used by the Office of Catechesis as office space and as meeting space for youth activities, but both of these functions were at a distance from the core areas of the parish. They have been relocated to more central locations, leaving the old rectory largely vacant. At the same time, the diocese has been giving consideration to replacing the house on Middle Tennessee Blvd. that is owned by the diocese and serves as a center for University Catholic at MTSU. At the initiative of the current student leadership, the diocese is in the process of buying the old rectory for the use of University Catholic at MTSU. Student, parish, and diocesan leadership are in agreement that this will serve the ministry, the parish, and the diocese well. For my part, I agree. The diocese proposes to sell the old student center in due course.

Finally, one more definite and official piece of information about the transition to a new pastor for Saint Rose. New clergy assignments will be announced by the diocese on Friday, May 27. I will keep you posted!

Avanzando
