Thanksgiving

11-21-2021Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

Thanksgiving is essential for a healthy spiritual life because it gets us out of ourselves! Turning away from self and being aware of our blessings helps us to make a gift of ourselves so that others can also be thankful. In the spiritual life, things are either getting better and better or worse and worse. There is no standing still. Thanksgiving definitely moves us forward fast!

The Eucharist is itself an act of thanksgiving for the greatest gift of self that has ever been made: Jesus giving Himself to us on the cross to the last drop of his blood. Eucharist actually means thanksgiving in Greek.

I find thanksgiving to be a great antidote for just about any interior struggles that I am facing. When I focus on my blessings, how can I be anything but better? I always remember a wonderful lady who worked at a Walgreens near a former parish. Her name was Marie. Whenever I greeted Marie and asked how she was doing, I always received this answer: "Blessed and highly favored." Marie had it right!

Faithfully,

Fr. Baker

No podemos estar igual.

Fielmente,

El p. Baker
