Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well

Dear Fellow Disciples, Dear Catechumens, peace.

Today on this Third Sunday of Lent, the Church gives us the Gospel of the Samaritan woman at the well (cf. Gospel of John 4:5-42). It is no coincidence that this Gospel accompanies the First Scrutiny of our catechumens. This is the Sunday of thirst.

Jesus meets a woman who comes to draw water at noon - tired, burdened, carrying her past. He does not begin with condemnation. He begins with thirst: "Give me a drink."

Discipleship always begins there - with the encounter between Christ's thirst and our thirst.

For our catechumens, the Scrutiny is not an exam. It is a moment of grace. The Church prays that whatever is weak, wounded, or sinful may be healed; and whatever is good and true may be strengthened. Like the woman at the well, they are invited to let Jesus touch the deepest places of the heart.

But this Gospel is not only for them. It is for all of us.

How often do we return to the same wells - success, comfort, distractions - hoping they will satisfy us? Yet we remain thirsty. Jesus tells the woman: "Whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst." The living water is His own life - the Holy Spirit poured into our hearts.

Notice the transformation:

• She arrives alone and ashamed.
• She leaves as a missionary.

True discipleship means allowing Christ to uncover our truth - not to humiliate us, but to free us. And once we have encountered Him, we cannot keep Him to ourselves.

As we pray for our catechumens today, we also ask for ourselves:

Lord, reveal our thirst.
Lord, cleanse our hearts.
Lord, make us true worshipers in Spirit and truth.

And like the Samaritan woman, may we leave this Eucharist ready to say: "Come and see a man who told me everything I have done."

That is the beginning of discipleship. That is the fruit of the Scrutiny.

May the Holy Spirit quench our thirst.

Jesús y la mujer Samaritana en el Pozo

Queridos Discípulos, Queridos Catecumenos, paz.

Hoy, en este tercer domingo de Cuaresma, la Iglesia nos regala el Evangelio de la samaritana junto al pozo (cf. Evangelio de Juan 4,5-42). No es casualidad que este Evangelio acompañe el Primer Escrutinio de nuestros catecúmenos. Este es el Domingo de la Sed.

Jesús se encuentra con una mujer que viene a sacar agua al mediodía, cansada, agobiada, cargando con su pasado. No empieza con una condenación. Empieza con la sed: "Dame de beber".

El discipulado siempre comienza allí: con el encuentro entre la sed de Cristo y nuestra sed.

Para nuestros catecúmenos, el Escrutinio no es un examen. Es un momento de gracia. La Iglesia ora para que todo lo débil, herido o pecador sea sanado; y todo lo bueno y verdadero sea fortalecido. Como la mujer junto al pozo, están invitados a dejar que Jesús toque lo más profundo de su corazón.

Pero este Evangelio no es solo para ellos. Es para todos nosotros.

¿Cuántas veces volvemos a las mismas fuentes -éxito, comodidad, distracciones- con la esperanza de que nos satisfagan? Sin embargo, seguimos sedientos. Jesús le dice a la mujer: "El que beba del agua que yo le daré, nunca más tendrá sed". El agua viva es su propia vida: el Espíritu Santo derramado en nuestros corazones.

Observa la transformación:

• Ella llega sola y avergonzada.
• Ella se va como misionera.

El verdadero discipulado significa permitir que Cristo descubra nuestra verdad, no para humillarnos, sino para liberarnos. Y una vez que lo hemos encontrado, no podemos guardárnoslo para nosotros mismos.

Mientras oramos hoy por nuestros catecúmenos, pedimos por nosotros:

• Señor, revela nuestra sed.
• Señor, limpia nuestros corazones.
• Señor, haznos verdaderos adoradores en espíritu y en verdad.

Y como la Samaritana, salgamos de esta Eucaristía dispuestos a decir: "Vengan a ver a un hombre que me ha dicho todo lo que he hecho."

Ese es el comienzo del discipulado. Ese es el fruto del Escrutinio.

Que el Espíritu Santo sacie nuestra sed.
