Repentance and Fruitfulness: A Lenten Reflection

Dear Fellow disciples, peace.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks about repentance using two powerful images: the tragedies that befell certain people and the parable of the barren fig tree. When people inform Jesus about the tragic deaths of some Galileans, He warns them, “Unless you repent, you will all perish as they did” (Luke 13:3). He then shares a parable about a fig tree that has not borne fruit for three years. The owner wants to cut it down, but the gardener pleads for one more year to care for it, hoping it will bear fruit.

This passage reminds us of God’s patience and mercy. Like the fig tree, we are given time to repent and grow in holiness. However, Jesus also warns us that time is not unlimited—we must turn back to God while we have the opportunity. Lent is that special season when God calls us to conversion, to examine our lives (enter in our inner room and their examine ourselves), and to bear good fruit through acts of love, forgiveness, and justice.

As we continue this Lenten journey, let us not delay our response to God’s invitation. May we use this time wisely, seeking His grace to transform our hearts and live as true disciples of Christ.

• In what areas of my life do I need to repent and bear more fruit?
• How can I show gratitude for God’s patience by growing in faith and love?

May the Holy Spirit help us to recognize His mercy and to respond with true repentance. May He give us the grace to bear fruit in our lives and draw closer to Him.

Arrepentimiento y fecundidad: Una reflexión cuaresmal

Queridos Discípulos, paz.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús habla del arrepentimiento usando dos imágenes impactantes: las tragedias que sufrieron ciertas personas y la parábola de la higuera estéril. Cuando le cuentan a Jesús sobre la trágica muerte de algunos galileos, les advierte: “Si no se arrepienten, todos perecerán como ellos” (Lucas 13:3). Luego comparte la parábola de una higuera que no ha dado fruto en tres años. El dueño quiere cortarla, pero el jardinero le ruega un año más para cuidarla, con la esperanza de que dé fruto.

Este pasaje nos recuerda la paciencia y la misericordia de Dios. Al igual que la higuera, tenemos tiempo para arrepentirnos y crecer en santidad. Sin embargo, Jesús también nos advierte que el tiempo no es ilimitado; debemos volver a Dios mientras tengamos la oportunidad. La Cuaresma es ese tiempo especial en el que Dios nos llama a la conversión, a examinar nuestras vidas (entrar en nuestro interior y luego examinarnos a nosotros mismos) y a dar buen fruto mediante actos de amor, perdón y justicia.

Al continuar este camino cuaresmal, no demoremos nuestra respuesta a la invitación de Dios. Que aprovechemos este tiempo con sabiduría, buscando su gracia para transformar nuestros corazones y vivir como verdaderos discípulos de Cristo.

Para ayudarnos a nuestro autoexamen y reflexión:

• ¿En qué áreas de mi vida necesito arrepentirme y dar más fruto?
• ¿Cómo puedo mostrar gratitud por la paciencia de Dios creciendo en la fe y el amor?

Que el Espíritu Santo nos ayude a reconocer su misericordia y a responder con verdadero arrepentimiento. Que nos dé la gracia de dar fruto en nuestras vidas y acercarnos a Él.
