27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

10-02-2022Weekly ReflectionFr. Chris Nunes

Dear Fellow Disciples,

To serve the Kingdom of God implies that the servant, minister, has the conscience that he or she is just a servant, a minister of God. Our decision to accept the call and embark in discipleship is free. It can't have expectations of rewards or worldly honors. "We are just servants, and have done just our duties". This is the attitude of a real servant of God's kingdom.

The parable of today's Gospel aims to respond to certain wrong tendencies amongst the leaders of the communities. There were some leaders who would give excessive importance to the themselves. To the point that they consider themselves superior to their brothers and sisters in the faith. Others would imitate the behavior of the masters of the law and demanded places of honor and special treatments. Some others, claimed for themselves the right to be served as lords of the others.

Jesus reproaches this mentality calling attention to the real and evangelical behavior to be cultivated among those called to lead. The first place must be occupied by lady humility. Followed by the conscience of being at the service of the community. Even when they are called to preside, they are servants.

An important element in serving God's kingdom is to know that we are just collaborators with God, in His work. This is a great dignity.

Let us ask the Lord the humility to serve in whatever position God and the Church calls us to serve and the courage to lead in God's name with His heart and mind, starting at our homes, the domestic church.
