One of the biggest mistakes in our Christian life is believing that we are good and that what we do is enough for our salvation. It is a big mistake because it makes us fall into mediocrity, and even worse it makes us assume that we have earned salvation just by being good or following some rules. This is what happens in today's gospel. We have the Pharisee who is sure that for following some laws and regulations God will reward him and save him. The problem is that for this Pharisee salvation does not depend on God but on his own life and ability to follow the rules and laws. The main thing for this man is to be faithful to the law, but this gives him a dangerous confidence since it makes him believe he is good, religious and perfect.

Little by little we become this Pharisee as individuals and as a community. As individuals we care about following the law; go to mass, confession, receive the sacraments. We relax and think that God has already saved us or even worse, we judge our brothers because they are not like us. As a community we think we do enough, and that we are already helping enough people. Our church is beautiful, it is clean and everything is fine. We see that we do not need to do more.

The Lord today shows us that we are far from reality. First of all we cannot judge anyone. This does not correspond to us because it is a unique work of God. Second, we cannot see our Christian life as simply complying with laws and regulations. This, no matter how good it is, is not going to save us because it leads us to arrogance and assuming divine salvation. What we have to do is like the publican who constantly recognizes his lack of virtue and asks God to bless him with more virtue. We are imperfect, that is our reality and that is why the Lord invites us to recognize this and to let ourselves be shaped by him. Humility is the key of a good Christian.

XXX Domingo Ordinario

Uno de los errores más grandes de nuestra vida cristiana es creer que somos buenos y que lo que hacemos es suficiente para nuestra salvación. Es un error porque nos hace caer en la mediocridad, y peor aún el asumir que me he ganado la salvación solo por ser bueno o seguir algunas normas. Esto es lo que sucede en el evangelio de hoy. Tenemos al fariseo seguro de que por seguir unas leyes y normas Dios lo premiará y lo salvara. El problema es que para este fariseo la salvación no depende de Dios sino de su propia vida y capacidad de seguir las normas y leyes. Lo principal para este hombre es ser fiel a la ley, pero esto le da una confianza peligrosa ya que lo hace creerse el bueno, el religioso el perfecto.

Poco a poco nos convertimos en este fariseo como individuos y como comunidad. Como individuos nos preocupamos por seguir la ley; ir a misa, confesarse, recibir los sacramentos. Nos tranquilizamos y pensamos que Dios ya nos salvó o peor aún juzgamos a nuestros hermanos porque no son como nosotros. Juzgamos porque unos son muy liberales u otros muy conservadores. Como comunidad pensamos que hacemos lo suficiente, y que ya ayudamos a bastante gente. Nuestra iglesia es bonita, está limpia y todo está bien.

El Señor hoy nos muestra que estamos lejos de la realidad. Primero que todo no podemos juzgar a nadie. Esto no nos corresponde pues es una labor única de Dios. Segundo, no podemos ver nuestra vida cristiana como un simple cumplimiento de leyes y normas. Esto por mas bueno que sea no nos va a salvar porque nos lleva a la prepotencia y el asumir la salvación divina. Lo que tenemos que hacer es como el publicano reconocer constantemente con sencillez nuestra falta de virtud y pedirle a Dios que nos bendiga con más. Somos imperfectos esa es nuestra realidad y por eso el Señor nos invita a que reconozcamos esto y a dejarnos moldear por él. Humildad esa es la clave del buen Cristiano.
