Treasures of the Church: Sacred Relics of the Saints

On Monday, March 28, we will have a special presentation at Saint Rose on the Sacred Relics of the Saints. There will be two opportunities for experiencing the presentation and for veneration of the relics: one during the day and one in the evening on Monday. Veneration of relics of the saints is an ancient practice of the church, even though it might be something that we are not particularly familiar with. The veneration of relics is connected to belief in the resurrection of the dead, as well as to the dignity of the human body. When Jesus comes again in His glory at the end of time, He will raise the dead in their bodies. This is the resurrection of the dead, which is central to our faith. And so, in some mysterious way, the bodily remains of the saints will be reunited to their souls in order to live again a fully human life, both body and soul. Veneration of relics is therefore a testimony of faith in the resurrection. The veneration of relics also is a recognition of the dignity of the human body, even after death. The body has received all the sacramental grace that we have received in our lives, for example. Through our bodies, we have lived in communion with God. Therefore, the human body is worthy of reverence. This should inspire us always to see that the remains of our beloved dead are honored with a funeral Mass and with Christian burial.

Tesoros de la Iglesia: Sagradas Reliquias de los Santos

La veneración de las reliquias de los santos es una práctica antigua de la iglesia, aunque puede ser algo con lo que no estemos particularmente familiarizados. La veneración de las reliquias está ligada a la creencia en la resurrección de los muertos, así como a la dignidad del cuerpo humano. Cuando Jesús regrese en Su gloria al final de los tiempos, resucitará a los muertos en sus cuerpos. Esta es la resurrección de los muertos, que es central en nuestra fe. Y así, de alguna manera misteriosa, los restos corporales de los santos serán reunidos en sus almas para volver a vivir una vida plenamente humana, tanto en cuerpo como en alma. La veneración de las reliquias es, por tanto, un testimonio de fe en la resurrección. La veneración de las reliquias es también un reconocimiento de la dignidad del cuerpo humano, incluso después de la muerte. El cuerpo ha recibido toda la gracia sacramental que nosotros hemos recibido en nuestra vida. A través de nuestros cuerpos, hemos vivido en comunión con Dios. Por lo tanto, el cuerpo humano es digno de reverencia. Esto debe inspirarnos siempre a velar por que los restos de nuestros amados difuntos sean honrados con una Misa y con cristiana sepultura.
