Christ Has no Body Now but Yours...

When Jesus returned to his hometown of Nazareth and spoke in the synagogue, the people listened when he read this passage from Isaiah:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to
bring glad tidings to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."

But they were offended when he said:
“Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

It is probably hardest to share and proclaim our faith with those we know well. And yet, if we don't, who will? Jesus applies the words of Isaiah to Himself. I propose that they apply to us as well. Go look at the Second Reading for this Sunday. St. Paul says:

"As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit."

St. Teresa of Avila echos St. Paul in her famous quotation:

“Christ has no body now but yours
No hands, no feet on earth but yours
Yours are the eyes through which He looks
Compassion on this world
Yours are the feet with which He walks to do good
Yours are the hands with which He blesses all the world
Yours are the hands
Yours are the feet
Yours are the eyes
You are His body
Christ has no body now on earth but yours”

We need to be a parish of individuals willing to go out and to bring others in, beginning with those closest to us. Receive what God has given you: the Spirit of Adoption as His Sons and Daughters. And then live it in power!

Cuando Jesús regresó a su ciudad natal de Nazaret y habló en la sinagoga, la gente escuchó cuando leyó este pasaje de Isaías:

"El espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, porque me ha ungido para llevar a los pobres la buena nueva, para anunciar la liberación a los cautivos y la curación a los ciegos, para dar libertad a los oprimidos y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor."

Pero se ofendieron cuando dijo:

“Hoy se cumple este pasaje de la Escritura en presencia de ustedes”.

Probablemente sea más difícil compartir y proclamar nuestra fe con aquellos que conocemos bien. Y sin embargo, si no lo hacemos nosotros, ¿quién lo hará? Jesús aplica las palabras de Isaías a sí mismo. Propongo que se apliquen a nosotros también. Vayan a ver la Segunda Lectura de este domingo. San Pablo dice:

"Así como el cuerpo es uno y tiene muchos miembros y todos ellos, a pesar de ser muchos, forman un solo cuerpo, así también es Cristo. Porque todos nosotros, seamos judíos o no judíos, esclavos o libres, hemos sido bautizados en un mismo Espíritu, para formar un solo cuerpo, y a todos se nos ha dado a beber del mismo Espíritu."

Santa Teresa de Ávila hace eco de San Pablo en su famosa cita:

"Cristo no tiene cuerpo, sino el tuyo, no tiene manos, o pies en la tierra, sino los tuyos, tuyos son los ojos con los que ve la compasión en este mundo, tuyos son los pies con los que camina para hacer el bien, tuyas son las manos, con el que bendice todo el mundo. Tuyas son las manos, tuyos son los pies, tuyos son los ojos, eres tu su cuerpo. Cristo no tiene otro cuerpo sino el tuyo".

Necesitamos ser una parroquia de personas dispuestas a salir y traer a otros, comenzando con los más cercanos a nosotros. Reciban lo que Dios les ha dado: el Espíritu de Adopción como Hijos e Hijas Suyos. ¡Y luego vívelo con su poder!
