Christmas is Here!

In looking at our church, it reminds me that Christmas is not a feeling or spirit but rather a fact of history. God became man at a particular time and in a particular place. Joseph and Mary were far from home at the time Jesus was born because of a government regulation. They were without a place to stay and took shelter in a cave with animals. Shepherds came to see them immediately, and mysterious magi from the East came later. Herod was disturbed to hear that a king had been born. He ordered the slaughter of babies in order to eliminate this king. Joseph, Mary, and Jesus fled to Egypt. This is the truth of Christmas.

St. Francis had the intuition that it was good to see what the birth of Jesus looked like, and Pope Francis has reiterated its importance. The backdrop of the starry night in the Nativity Scene in the front of the church was made by children in the school in their art class. The Nativity in the narthex comes from Bethlehem itself and is carved from an olive tree. I encourage you to take time to pray before these reminders of the reality of Christmas and of Jesus. The beauty, humility, and poverty of the Nativity can be a powerful encounter with the fullness of Jesus Christ with us. Praise Him!

Al mirar a nuestra iglesia, me recuerda que la Navidad no es un sentimiento o espíritu, sino un hecho histórico. Dios se hizo hombre en un momento y lugar determinados. José y María estaban lejos de casa cuando Jesús nació debido a una regulación gubernamental. No tenían un lugar donde quedarse y se refugiaron en un pesebre con animales. Los pastores vinieron a verlos de inmediato, y después vinieron misteriosos magos de Oriente. Herodes se molestó al saber que había nacido un rey. Ordenó la matanza de bebés para eliminar a este rey. José, María y Jesús huyeron a Egipto. Esta es la verdad de la Navidad.

San Francisco tuvo la intuición de que era bueno ver cómo era el nacimiento de Jesús, y el Papa Francisco ha reiterado su importancia. El telón de fondo de la noche estrellada en el Belén en el frente de la iglesia fue realizado por los niños de la escuela en su clase de arte. La Natividad en el nártex proviene del mismo Belén y está tallada en un olivo. Los animo a que se tomen un tiempo para orar ante estos recordatorios de la realidad de la Navidad y de Jesús. La belleza, la humildad y la pobreza de la Natividad pueden ser un encuentro poderoso con la plenitud de Jesucristo con nosotros. ¡Alabado sea!
