Virtue Stands in the Middle

09-05-2021Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

This expression is sometimes called the "golden mean," and it comes from the teachings of philosopher Aristotle. We need to remember that human virtue is found in the middle, especially in times of polarization when we are tempted to go to the extreme on one side or the other.

I think that it is helpful to remember the golden mean when we approach precautions about the pandemic. These precautions should be about reducing health risks and not about matters of ideology. Bishop Spalding, for example, has this week mandated masks for the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Nashville because of the current increase of cases generally and in the schools in particular. Even though you may not agree with this decision, it is a reasonable and moderate position, to be reviewed in a month. You can watch the bishop's video here. We will, of course, follow the bishop's directive here at Saint Rose School and for other comparable activities that take place indoors over longer periods of time.

The golden mean of moderation applies to the human virtues such as prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude. There is no moderation, however, in the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity. We always have the opportunity to go the extreme and to excel in charity!

Faithfully,

Fr. Baker

Fielmente,

El p. Baker
