Weddings and Funerals

08-08-2021Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

Weddings and funerals are not much alike, other than being important ceremonies celebrated in the church. Even on a practical level, weddings usually have a long time of planning and preparation leading up to the celebration whereas funerals need to be planned and finalized in a short time. If you are planning to get married, please contact the church office to set up an initial appointment at least six months in advance. This time is needed for your marriage preparation, as well as for scheduling the ceremony itself.

Before a wedding can be scheduled, the parties' freedom to enter into the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony needs to be established, as well as their intentions to enter into the sacrament. This will be established at the first meeting with a priest or deacon. After that, the sacramental preparation process can continue, and the wedding can be scheduled. Catholics are obliged to be married in the Church and to be prepared for the sacrament by the Church. Dispensations can be granted for a Catholic to be married in another Christian community, but dispensations are not usually granted to be married in a secular venue. In any case, the preparation needs to be done in a Catholic setting. The Church is careful about marriage because it is so important and because she has such a distinctive and beautiful teaching on marriage. The Catholic Church teaches the highest ideals about marriage and the most exalted dignity for the couple! The Church will not only help you to enrich the celebration of your wedding but will also help you to live out your commitments with joy and peace during your married life. As simple or elaborate a wedding as might be planned, the Church will see to it that the ceremony is beautiful and dignified. A wedding in the Church need not be a matter of great expense, and yet it will always be a celebration of the faith. Ordinarily weddings at Saint Rose are scheduled on Saturdays at 2 p.m. Other times, especially Friday evenings, are also possible; but Saturday afternoons are reserved for weddings. Please contact the office if you have questions or would like an appointment.

Faithfully,

Fr. Baker

Fielmente,

El p. Baker
