Holy Week and Easter This Year; Lifting of Dispensation

03-21-2021Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER THIS YEAR

After the sad Holy Week and Easter last year with liturgical celebrations without the faithful present, I am very happy that we will once again have public celebrations of these holy days. Although there will still be some alterations in the liturgies and our attendance will be limited, we will be celebrating together as a parish.

Here are some notes on the schedule and changes for this year: Palm Sunday -- We will not be having a procession but will distribute and bless palms at the beginning of every Mass for Palm Sunday. Livestream will be provided as on a regular Sunday.

Holy Week -- On Tuesday evening of Holy Week, we will not be having Adoration, Confessions, and Mass in Spanish. The priests will all be in Nashville for the Chrism Mass with Bishop Spalding. It is the Mass at which priests renew their commitment of service to God's people in commemoration of the institution of the priesthood at the Last Supper. Last year, the Chrism Mass was postponed until long after Holy Week and Easter. It will be a joy to gather with the priests of the diocese and the bishop for this Mass.

Holy Thursday -- There is only the Mass of the Lord's Supper in the evening this day so no morning Mass. For the Triduum, we will have a celebration of the Office of Readings and Morning Prayer each morning at 8 a.m. in place of Mass. For the Mass of the Lord's Supper in the evening, we will have one celebration for the parish as it is really not possible to repeat this liturgy. Therefore to serve the whole community, the service will be partially in English and in Spanish. We will have Adoration until midnight at the Altar of Repose in the Jo Call Room, concluding with Compline.

Good Friday -- We will have two celebrations of the Passion of the Lord: one in English at 3pm and another in Spanish at 7pm At noon, there will be Stations of the Cross in Spanish.

Easter Vigil -- The Easter Vigil will be at 8pm on Saturday because the Vigil needs to begin after dark. Like Holy Thursday, it is not possible to repeat the Vigil so the celebration will be partially in both English and Spanish. We will also simplify the ceremonies to shorten the length of the Mass for this year. Only the catechumens - those to be baptized - will be initiated into the Church at the Vigil. Our candidates who are already baptized will be received into the Church and Confirmed later.

Easter Sunday -- All Mass will have overflow into the gym. There will be an additional Mass in Spanish at 1pm Please sign up for all of these celebrations as usual. All Holy Week ceremonies and Easter Masses will be livestreamed. Please refer to the Holy Week and Easter Schedule in the bulletin, the parish email, and on the website for more information about Confessions, etc.

Faithfully,

Fr. Baker

LIFTING OF DISPENSATION

As of Palm Sunday, Bishop Spalding is lifting the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. This is a return to the normal situation of the Church regarding attendance at Mass. I want to get this word to you as soon as possible, even though we will be working out the practical implications here at Saint Rose in the days to come.

Fundamentally, let me say that this is a cause for rejoicing, even as we work out the details. Please be attentive to communications from the parish as we continue to return from the limitations of the pandemic.
