Covid & The Liturgy

The pandemic has affected just about every aspect of our lives for almost a year now. This includes the liturgy. I want to give a reminder about music and announce a change that will be in effect for Ash Wednesday.

We have generally been avoiding robust congregational singing during the pandemic because vocal production disperses aerosols in a particularly dramatic way. That is why we have had limited use of hymns, for example. The singing we have been doing has generally been simple chants which are meant to be sung quietly. Chants are the music of the liturgy par excellence as they emphasize the words we sing. We have, for example, been able to sing more words from Sacred Scripture at Mass -- the verses at the entrance, offertory, and Holy Communion processions -- are all given to us by the Church from the words of the Bible to complement the readings and prayers of each Mass. I invite you to join in these verses, much like the Responsorial Psalm and the Alleluia, which we are all familiar with. The opportunity to chant the scriptures is a blessing indeed!

For this year because of the pandemic, the Holy See has mandated that the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday be carried out in a way that is perhaps unfamiliar to many of us, although it is used in much of the world on a regular basis. Rather than having an ash cross imposed on our foreheads, ashes will instead be sprinkled on the top of our heads. Here is an image of Pope Francis imposing ashes in this manner:

The reason for this directive is so that there is no touching involved. To receive ashes in this way, one approaches the minister and bows so that the ashes can be sprinkled on the head. The words that are usually said for each individual will instead be said for the whole congregation. Again, this is to limit potential exposure. I appreciate the care and forethought that has gone into these precautions.

Covid y La Liturgia

La pandemia ha afectado casi todos los aspectos de nuestras vidas durante casi un año. Esto incluye la liturgia. Quiero hacer un recordatorio sobre la música y anunciar un cambio que estará vigente para el Miércoles de Ceniza. En general, hemos estado evitando el canto congregacional fuerte durante la pandemia porque la producción vocal dispersa los aerosoles de una manera particularmente dramática. Es por eso que hemos tenido un uso limitado de himnos. El canto que hemos estado haciendo generalmente ha sido cánticos simples que deben cantarse en voz baja. Los cánticos son la mUsica de la liturgia por excelencia, ya que enfatizan las palabras que cantamos. Hemos podido, por ejemplo, cantar más palabras de la Sagrada Escritura en la Misa - los versos de la entrada, el ofertorio y las procesiones de la Sagrada Comunión - nos son dados por la Iglesia a partir de las palabras de la Biblia para complementar el lecturas y oraciones de cada Misa. Para este año debido a la pandemia, la Santa Sede ha ordenado que la distribución de cenizas el Miércoles de Ceniza se lleve a cabo de una manera que quizás a muchos de nosotros no nos resulte familiar, aunque se usa en gran parte del mundo de manera regular. En lugar de que nos impongan una cruz de ceniza en la frente, las cenizas se esparcirán en la parte superior de nuestras cabezas. Aqul hay una imagen del Papa Francisco imponiendo cenizas de esta manera: El motivo de esta directiva es que no se trata de tocar. Para recibir las cenizas de esta manera, uno se acerca al ministro y se inclina para que las cenizas puedan ser esparcidas sobre la cabeza. Las palabras que generalmente se dicen para cada individuo se dirán en cambio para toda la congregación. Nuevamente, esto es para limitar la exposiciOn potencial. Agradezco el cuidado y la previsiOn que se ha puesto en estas precauciones.

También se tomarán precauciones similares para la bendición de gargantas el miércoles, el Memorial de San Blas. La bendición se dirá sobre toda la congregación. No habrá bendición con velas, nuevamente para evitar tocar. Nuestros obispos han dado esta directiva para la situaciOn de la pandemia de este año.
