Virtue Stands in the Middle

We are living through troubling times. On top of a public health pandemic, which has brought about economic upheaval, we now experience civil unrest, including demonstrations and curfews. Unlike the pandemic and the economic issues, however, I think that there is clear guidance for us in the civil disturbance.

In the first place, the incident that sparked the demonstrations is a clear act of injustice which deserves and requires a response of righteous anger. Not only is the murder of George Floyd an act of injustice and violence, it is also another example in a troubling pattern of injustice towards African Americans which has a long history in our country. Demonstration in this circumstance is entirely justified. As a matter of fact, the failure to condemn this act and the pattern it exemplifies would be an act of cowardice in the face of injustice.

Those who have used these justified demonstrations against injustice as a pretext for violence and attacks on innocent parties and property are acting unjustly themselves. Riots, which involve burning and looting of public and private property and the endangerment of innocent parties, are not justified. In response to these acts of injustice, others are tempted to use disproportionate force to put down the riots -- or even the peaceful demonstrations. It is a cycle of violence that has no end, pivoting from one extreme to the other.

Human virtue is always found within limits. The authority of the police to use force is limited. The right to demonstrate is limited. The only situation in which we can act without limits is in the exercise of the supernatural virtues of faith, hope, and love. There is no way to have too much faith, hope, or love. Feel free to go to extremes in these!

La Virtud se Encuentra en la Centro

Estamos viviendo tiempos difíciles. Además de una pandemia de salud pública, que ha provocado trastornos económicos, ahora experimentamos disturbios civiles, incluidas manifestaciones y toques de queda. Sin embargo, a diferencia de la pandemia y los problemas económicos, creo que hay una guía clara para nosotros en los disturbios civiles.

En primer lugar, el incidente que provocó las manifestaciones es un claro acto de injusticia que merece y requiere una respuesta justa. El asesinato de George Floyd no solo es un acto de injusticia y violencia, sino que también es otro ejemplo de un patrón preocupante de injusticia hacia los afroamericanos que tiene una larga historia en nuestro país. Las demostraciónes en esta circunstancia está totalmente justificada. De hecho, el no condenar este acto y el patrón que ejemplifica sería un acto de cobardía frente a la injusticia.

Quienes han utilizado estas manifestaciones justificadas contra la injusticia como pretexto para la violencia y los ataques contra personas y propiedades inocentes están actuando injustamente ellos mismos. Los disturbios, que implican la quema y el saqueo de la propiedad pública y privada y pone en peligro a personas inocentes, no están justificados. En respuesta a estos actos de injusticia, otros se sienten tentados a usar la fuerza desproporcionada para sofocar los disturbios, o incluso las manifestaciones pacíficas. Es un ciclo de violencia que no tiene fin, que gira de un extremo al otro.

La virtud humana siempre se encuentra dentro de los límites. La autoridad de la policía para usar la fuerza es limitada. El derecho a manifestarse es limitado. La única situación en la que podemos actuar sin límites es en el ejercicio de las virtudes sobrenaturales de la fe, la esperanza y el amor. No sé puede tener demasiada fe, esperanza o amor. ¡Siéntete libre de llegar a los extremos en estas virtudes!
