The Sign of the Cross

One important thing to remember about liturgical prayer is that it is expressed not only in words. Gestures are also prayers. We see this in the first prayer of the Mass: the sign of the cross. There are words accompanying this prayer: ''In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen." But equally important as prayer is the gesture that actually gives the name to the prayer: the signing of the cross on our bodies. This gesture interprets the words for us. To accept the call to life in the Holy Trinity, it is necessary for us to be conformed the cross of Jesus Christ. The cross is the way to the fullness of life, and there is no other way.

When we pray this prayer, it is important that we be bold and clear about both the words and the gesture. If we are not careful (and we need to be careful about everything in the Mass), the words can become a mumble and the gesture a sloppy swipe of the hand. We should rather say the words distinctly and make the gesture fully, from the top of our foreheads to our waists and across to both shoulders. If we pray this prayer in a strong way, we have made a profound statement of faith in the Holy Trinity and in the Saving Cross of Christ. Now we are ready to begin!

La Señal de la Cruz

Una cosa importante para recordar acerca de la oración litúrgica es que se expresa no solo en palabras. Los gestos también son oraciones. Vemos esto en la primera oración de la Misa: La señal de la cruz. Hay palabras que acompañan esta oración: '' En el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo. Amén”. Pero igual de importante que la oración es el gesto que realmente da nombre a la oración: la señal de la cruz en nuestros cuerpos. Este gesto interpreta las palabras. Para aceptar el llamado a la vida en la Santísima Trinidad, es necesario que seamos seguidores de la cruz de Jesucristo. La cruz es el camino hacia la plenitud de la vida, y no hay otro camino.

Cuando rezamos esta oración, es importante que tengamos intención y seamos tanto sobre las palabras como sobre el gesto. Si no tenemos cuidado (y debemos tener cuidado con todo en la Misa), las palabras pueden convertirse en un murmullo y el gesto en un ademan descuidado de la mano. Más bien deberíamos decir las palabras con claridad y hacer el gesto completamente, desde la parte superior de la frente hasta la cintura y hasta los dos hombros. Si rezamos esta oración de una manera fuerte, habremos hecho una profunda declaración de fe en la Santísima Trinidad y en la Cruz Salvadora de Cristo. ¡Ahora estamos listos para comenzar!
