Year One

07-21-2019Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

I am going to make an effort to give a "state of the parish" report, having completed my first year as pastor. What a year it has been! Thank God for his grace and mercy, and thank you all for your generosity and patience. Without God's grace and your goodness, I could accomplish nothing.

We are blessed with three priests in the parish, although we have not actually had three priests in residence, except for a few weeks. Fr. Michael has been such a gift to the parish with his warmth and gentleness since he arrived in November, and when Fr. Edwuin comes back from Columbia in early August (we hope!), three will be our normal number of priests. I also believe that there will soon be news to report about Fr. Joe finishing his medical leave and returning to an assignment in the diocese, but that is still in the discussion stage. I look forward to hearing more news from the diocese to pass on to you. Our deacons Pete Semich and John D'Amico continue to serve with distinction and dedication. I don't know where we would be without them. We have also been blessed this summer with the presence of seminarian Preston Thompson, who has served the parish with eagerness and joy.

Our parish staff is practically all new on staff or in new positions within the staff. This is exciting but also stressful. I thank you and the staff for your patience as everyone gets up to speed. Here is an overview of the parish staff. Amy Swartz is the director of administration and stewardship which means that she directs the parish office and parish communications. Serving with her are Laurie McNicholas, who is the registrar for sacramental records and enrollment for sacramental and catechetical instruction. That is a big job in a big, complicated parish like St. Rose. We are also blessed in the office with Sandy Middleton, who is our bilingual receptionist. Sandy also helps with records for the Hispanic community with her facility in Spanish. On the business side is Kim Smith, our parish business manager. Working with Kim are John Williams, our facilities manager; Jodi Jones, bookkeeper; and Jose Cruz, who takes care of accounts payable. Both Kim and John are long-time employees of the parish, and we appreciate their experience so much these days. Jodi is a parishioner, school parent, and CPA -- who is very happy to be engaged in the mission of St. Rose. Jose is a St. Rose School alum and a parishioner, who is also furthering his studies while working part-time in the parish. Dr. Ben Smith is our director of catechesis, overseeing life-long opportunities for instruction in Christian discipleship. Michaela Miller is focusing particularly, but not exclusively, on youth ministry where she has demonstrated such great experience and passion. Isaac Johnson has just arrived this month as director of music, and we look forward to his contributions to our parish worship as he settles in. We are also blessed with a host of valuable volunteers in various capacities.

And I haven't even mentioned St. Rose School! Sr. Catherine Marie,O.P. continues as principal. We are indeed blessed by her leadership. We are also blessed by a remarkably stable school faculty and staff. I unfortunately don't have room to mention them all in this space. In many parishes, the parish school can be a source of concern for the pastor, but I am happy to say that here at St. Rose the school is healthy and strong. I cannot recommend it enough to our parishioners. Please do not hesitate to come forward if you have any interest in the school for your children. The school adds a depth of communion to the whole parish, and I want every parishioner to benefit from all that the parish offers, including the school.

To be continued...

Faithfully,
Fr. Baker

Fielmente,
el P. Baker
