Graduations

05-19-2019Weekly ReflectionFr. John Sims Baker

It is certainly the time for graduations in Murfreesboro. MTSU has already graduated. All the high school graduations took place over the past week and this weekend. Saint Rose School celebrated graduation this past Friday. Congratulations to all who have graduated. Congratulations as well to all who have supported the graduates over the years, especially parents and teachers. Graduation is an accomplishment for all of you!

I remember my 8th grade graduation from St. Pius School, which my parents made great sacrifices for my sister and me to attend even though we were not Catholic at the time. Msgr. Riley gave the homily at the graduation Mass. He was the pastor of a neighboring parish with many students at St. Pius -- they actually had a bus for their children to ride to school. By the way, Msgr Riley had been pastor of St. Rose earlier in his priesthood. He is the pastor pictured in a military uniform in the Shepherds' Hallway because he had been a military chaplain for much of his priesthood. In any case, Msgr. Riley told us that St. Pius would be our true Alma Mater. By that he meant that St. Pius would have more influence on us than anywhere else we would go to school. His words have certainly proven true in my case, and I have been to a lot of schools since that time, including MTSU now! St. Pius taught me that faith in Jesus Christ and real life can be lived together. At. St. Pius, I was brought into a living communion of faith that included the totality of life. Certainly we went to Mass and studied religion, but we also played hard in sports as the smallest school in even the Catholic school league and were a part of everything in the parish. Sometimes it was a challenge because it involved being with others in this adventure of faith and life. Yet the experience had great integrity.

I believe that the graduates of St. Rose School will find the same to be true of theirexperiences here. Faith and life, including school, go best together.

Faithfully,
Fr. Baker

Graduaciones

Fielmente,
el P. Baker
