Stocking Our Pantry for Weekend Backpack Food Bags

Weekend Backpack Food Bags

The Weekend Backpack Food Ministry is now beginning to stock the Pantry for the preparation of the backpack bags for the 2018-2019 school year. Our first delivery of the Backpack bags is scheduled for Aug 10.

Words cannot fully express our gratitude for all of the donations from our St. Rose Family that have made it possible for the Backpack Weekend Food Ministry to provide 1,124 backpack meals for students at Kittrell Elementary School and Riverdale High School during the previous school year. We also provided 128 smaller bags during Fall Break, Thanksgiving Holidays, Winter Break and the Easter/Spring Break so that students would have food items available while they are not in school and unable to obtain school breakfast and lunch meals.

As we prepare the Pantry for Backpack Bags for the new school year, we would appreciate donations. We are required to place the following items in each bag:

  • 1 carton of shelf stable milk: e.g. Hershey’s, Horizon, Kirkland’s (Costco Brand), (a pudding cup or hot chocolate packet allows us to provide a 2nd milk source).
  • 2 Breakfast Meals, e.g. Instant Oatmeal, Pop Tarts or Quaker Breakfast Bar
  • 2 Dinner Meals, e.g., 7– 8 Ounce cans of Chef Boyardee Lasagna, Ravioli, Spaghetti O’s, Spaghetti & Meatballs, Mac & Cheese, Chicken, Rice & Vegetables, or any other variety of the same size; or, 7-8 Ounce Pop Top cans of Chicken & Dumplings, Beanie Weenies, Pork & Beans, Chili, Vienna Sausage
  • Tuna Salad, Ham Salad or Chicken Salad Lunch kits (salad and crackers)
  • Easy Mac & Cheese envelopes (kids love Mac & Cheese) – (these envelopes allow us to provide the Mac & Cheese in the one-gallon bag without the bulk of the usual Mac & Cheese Cups)
  • 2 Fruits: Applesauce, peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, etc. (Individual Fruit cups or pouches)
  • 1 Fruit juice (Carton or Pouches)

We additionally prepare a snack bag containing a combination of some of the following items, as available: protein bars, fruit & grain bars, peanut butter crackers, cheese crackers, Slim Jims, raisins, fruit, and gummy snacks.

NOTE: These items must fit in a single one-gallon bag. SIZE MATTERS! We cannot fit large items in the bags. They must carry them home on Fridays on the bus! Please write Backpack Meals on your donation bag and place it in the Pantry Food Chest located in the Narthex.

Thank you for your generosity. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Ann Baird at 615-396-0431.
