From Obligation to Devotion

"We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do." These words from the Gospel remind us that we are truly servants in relationship to God. And yet, to serve God is to be fulfilled in joy and freedom! Let's think about that.

I am finding comfort, strength, and hope in my servant relationship with our God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The readings for this Sunday are simply amazing! Through the Prophet Habakkuk we hear: "Destruction and violence are before me, there is strife and clamorous discord." How true is that of our world and our lives today? And yet God assures us: "For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; if it delays, wait for it." St. Paul tells us in the Second Reading: "For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control...Take as your norm the sound words that you heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us." To serve God is better than to try to be my own master.

How much better it is to serve this amazing God than to struggle on my own? When I recognize all that God does for me, I am happy to serve. I move from acting out of a sense of obligation into the loving service of devotion. Let's move our hearts from obligation to devotion! As the Responsorial Psalm says, "If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts."

De la Obligación a la Devoción

Somos siervos inútiles; hemos hecho solo lo que estábamos obligados a hacer". Estas palabras del Evangelio nos recuerdan que somos verdaderamente siervos en relación con Dios. Y, sin embargo, ¡servir a Dios es llenarse de alegría y libertad! Pensemos en eso.

Encuentro consuelo, fortaleza y esperanza en mi relación de servicio con nuestro Dios: Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo. ¡Las lecturas de este domingo son simplemente increíbles! A través del Profeta Habacuc escuchamos: "La destrucción y la violencia están ante mí, hay conflictos y discordias clamorosas". ¿Cuán cierto es ésto de nuestro mundo y nuestras vidas hoy? Y, sin embargo, Dios nos asegura: "Porque la visión todavía tiene su tiempo, avanza hacia el cumplimiento y no decepcionará; si se demora, espere". San Pablo nos dice en la segunda lectura: "Porque Dios no nos dio un espíritu de cobardía, sino de poder, amor y autocontrol ... Tomen como norma las palabras que escuchó de mí, en la fe y amor que están en Cristo Jesús. Protejan esta rica confianza con la ayuda del Espíritu Santo que habita dentro de nosotros ". Servir a Dios es mejor que tratar de ser mi propio amo.

¿Cuánto mejor es servir a este Dios asombroso a luchar solo? Cuando reconozco todo lo que Dios hace por mí, estoy feliz de servir. No actuó por un sentido de obligación sino al servicio amoroso de la devoción. ¡Movamos nuestros corazones de la obligación a la devoción! Como dice el Salmo Responsorial: "Si hoy escuchas su voz, no endurezcas tu corazón".
